Supreme Court confirms the laws permitting Jallikattu
On Thursday, the Supreme Court affirmed the validity of the traditional ‘Jallikattu’ and ‘bullock cart’ races.
Jallikattu is a traditional bull-taming sport that has been practiced in the state of Tamil Nadu, India, for centuries. The term “Jallikattu” is derived from the Tamil words “Jalli” (meaning gold or silver coins) and “Kattu” (meaning tied). The sport involves releasing a bull into a crowd of people, and the participants try to catch hold of the bull’s hump and hold on to it for a specific duration of time or distance.
The Supreme Court upheld the validity of the traditional bull-taming sport Jallikattu and bullock cart races today.
Directions have been given to state governments to strictly ensure the safety and protection of animals under the law.
The order was pronounced by five constitutional judges led by Judge KM Joseph.
